Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Finally Maruti has come up with a car that is jack of all trades. Very rightly calling it as LUV (Life Utility Vehicle) Maruti has managed to pack this car with good price and styling. This offering from Maruti Suzuki is a threat to not only a couple of cars but to a couple of segments. It is priced very closely to the hatchback segment and is also dangerously close to the MUV segment. It is a complete package of power, space, utility, performance, looks and sharp pricing.

I am sure the sales of Mahindra Xylo are going to be affected by the launch of Ertiga. Ertiga comes with better engine, better handling and very sharp prices. The other car that’s going to be affected is the Innova which is till date the undisputed king of this segment. I will not say that Ertiga is as spacious as Innova and Xylo but it does has enough space to accommodate almost as many people as these MUVs can. It has a gem of an engine which is definitely better than Xylo and is as good as the engine of the Innova.

It has three rows and can accommodate 7 people comfortably though the last row is a little cramped but is good enough for children. If the last row is folded you will get large boot space. Though Maruti Suzuki is not pitching Ertiga directly against Xylo and Innova but it inevitably is going to compete with these due to the amount of space it has, its torque and powerful engine and the sharp prices. Ertiga is a Marutis first offering in the premium Utility segment.
Ertiga is based on Maruti Swift platform and is available in both petrol and diesel variants. Ertiga petrol variant is powered by an all new 1.4 litre 1372cc K series (K14B) petrol engine that churns out a good 95 Ps of peak power at 6000 rpm and a torque of 130 Nm at 4000 rpm. The K series engines of Suzuki are known to be extremely fuel efficient and Maruti claims a mileage of 16.02 km per litre in their petrol variant.

The diesel variant sports the 1.3 L 1196cc DDiS Super Turbo diesel engine that does duty in their SX4 sedan. This engine produces a peak power of 90 Ps at 4000 rpm and a massive torque of 200 Nm at 1750 rpm. This is an extremely fuel efficient engine and Maruti Suzuki claims a mileage of 20.77 kmpl.
While I was driving Ertiga (I got to drive the diesel variant) it impressed me the moment I turned the ignition on. The engine response powerful and zippy and you can feel very little noise inside the cabin. The engine obeys your command and the handling compliments it to make the driving this car a pleasure. Cabin is nicely done with good quality fit and finish. The plastic and upholstery quality is very good.

This is a front wheel driven car and comes with a five speed manual transmission system and ABS as standard in all variants. The top end variant comes with two airbags, twin AC, 3 spoke tilt-power steering with mounted controls, USB Compatible audio system, multi information display, keyless entry, and many more features to make your drive a comfortable one. I especially find the seats very comfortable with good shoulder and leg support. This is going to be another hot selling product from Maruti and already the delivery for this LUV is around 2-3 months that shows the tremendous response it has got from the buyers.

There is a new segment that has quietly grown in last couple of years and is now playing a big game in the sales of passenger cars. This is the MPV segment that has shown a good growth of around 12-13% in last few years along with the SUV segment. The biggest player in this segment is Innova that has almost ruled this segment for many years now. But this Auto Expo in New Delhi has marked a new chapter in the MPV segment with almost all major car manufacturers showcased their MPVs that will in launched in this year.

Showcased at Auto Expo 2012, Ertiga the all new MPV from the stable of Maruti is set to be launched in the month of March. I have seen this MPV at Auto Expo 2012 and I must say that it’s an impressive package with good looks, practicality and not to miss it comes with the most trusted Maruti after sale services.

Expected to be in the price bracket of 6-7 lakhs this will directly compete with the Innova and the Mahindra Xylo. The vehicle is designed keeping in mind the basic characteristic of this emerging MPV segment that demands a car that is spacious enough to carry at least 7 people and at the same time is easy to maneuver in the city as well. It will be launched with both petrol and diesel engines. The Petrol engine will be an all new K-series K-14 VVT engine and the diesel engine will the famous 1.3 litre DDiS Super Turbo diesel engine.

It will be a 7-seater (3 rows (2x3x2)) with compact dimensions that will help it to be maneuvered in the city with an ease which will give it an edge over its rivals Innova and Xylo. The interiors are plush and the exteriors give it an imposing presence on the road. I believe it’s an intelligent and clever move by Maruti to launch it early this year at a time when the markets are bouncing back and the economy is coming back on track. This will surely help in boosting the sales of Ertiga.

It’s a very practical kind of a car that is designed for those who like to go on long drives with family and need a lot of boot space to stack their luggage. Its compact size will make it ideal for those people as well who want to use it on everyday basis to reach their office and commute in the city.

The looks, size and styling of the car make it a versatile vehicle. To enhance the comfort it comes with a twin AC, steering mounted audio controls, central door locking and keyless entry, 3-spoke tilt adjustable electric steering wheel, information display with multiple functions, power windows, electronically adjustable mirrors, etc. In short its feature rich car and can charm your senses in no time.
